An “emaciated” puppy from the Bronx, discovered neglected and in a “critical state” last week, is now “happy”, “loved” and about to join a new home after a local animal rescue sprung into action.
NYC Second Chance Rescue first shared the story of the pup, who has been given the name Baby Gina, on Jan. 22, when it posted an image of the “suffering” dog to Facebook.
At the time, the nonprofit revealed that the tiny puppy, who was just months old, was discovered “roaming the halls” of a Bronx apartment building.
“Not only is she skin and bones, but she is vomiting and weak. We rushed her to our partner vet for immediate care,” Second Chance previously shared. “The vets think she is just a few months old. Just one look at her, and you can feel her suffering. Her condition is pure abuse, neglect, and the work of the devil.”
The nonprofit then detailed what the next 48 hours had in store for Baby Gina: X-rays, bloodwork and ultimately being “monitored around the clock for a life-threatening condition called Refeeding Syndrome” — a condition where someone who has been malnourished begins feeding again.
“There are so many unknowns. We are just praying she can pull through,” Second Chance wrote. “She is just a baby.”
But as of Friday, Jan. 31, Baby Gina has fortunately found her forever home — and she’s no longer required to stay in the hospital.

In its latest Facebook update, the nonprofit shared snaps of Baby Gina in a blue onesie and revealed that the pup will be leaving the care of her “phenomenal team of doctors” to eventually join her “new mom.” While Second Chance was not initially “sure if she’d make it” during her hospital stay, the organization still promised to “do everything in our power to save her” throughout the process.
“Gina’s adopter is no stranger to SCR and has adopted with us before. Gina is moving into a beautiful home and has gained two fur siblings: a rat terrier and a poodle. She has a big yard to play in and more toys than she could ever dream of! We cannot thank our community enough for your fight to save her life,” Second Chance continued.
“You inspire us everyday and our hope is that we inspire you too. Miracles do happen and second chance are beautiful.”
Baby Gina’s recovery was thanks to the efforts of the nonprofit, which continued to share updates on her condition throughout the past week. On Jan. 23, a day after announcing Baby Gina’s rescue, Second Chance revealed that she was “in serious but stable condition.”
“She is anemic, her proteins are low, and she has enamel hypoplasia, all from malnutrition. Her biggest battles are she has a urinary tract infection and is at high risk of refeeding syndrome,” Second Chance wrote. “Refeeding syndrome can appear in the blink of an eye and quickly becomes life-threatening.”
Nonetheless, Baby Gina persisted. In a Facebook update just days later, the nonprofit noted that despite the pup’s “many medical ailments due to the abuse, she is proving to be tiny but mighty.” While the dog was “getting stronger and moving further away from the possibility of complications,” Baby Gina’s condition prompted an “active investigation.”
“We want to thank our amazing community for your determination to save Baby Gina. In her short life, she has seen horrors and the worst of the world. We now have the privilege of showing her just how beautiful the world is and how much she is loved.”

Finally, in another update this week, Baby Gina could be seen in better condition after gaining a bit of weight. Following her “around-the-clock care” for “malnourishment, a bad infection, low proteins, and anemia,” the pup was finally “doing well.”
“Gina remains hospitalized and is doing well — she is happy, she is loved, and she is recovering. She even has a bunch of new sweaters to keep her warm while she gains weight. We couldn’t help but share this photo of the Baby Gina; she looks so peaceful.”
Second Chance has also promised to share some new photos of Baby Gina in her new home.
